Happy Labor Day, Dolphins!
Have you ever heard of hotdog season? According to the National Hotdog and Sausage Council, Americans will devour about 7 billion hotdogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day - nothing says summer like a BBQed hotdog! The end of the season is today, but that’s not the real reason we’re out of school. Today is Labor Day, and while there are many ways to celebrate the holiday, we might not all know where it originally comes from.
The U.S. and Canada celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of September, but lots of countries celebrate the holiday in some capacity throughout the year. Labor Day is special because it reminds us to think about workers that we might sometimes forget today, but it also reminds us of who was part of the workforce in other periods of history. Did you know that it used to be common for kids to work in factories, and they got paid very little money? Imagine if you had to work every single day without getting a break. We get lots of breaks from school, and we get two whole months for summer. Labor Day is not only about who is working but making sure the work they are doing is safe and paid fairly.
While we are out of school, it’s a great time to talk to the adults in your life about the work they do and to think about all the people who do jobs that make your life easier. Make a plan to thank someone for their work, not just today, but every single day!
